“When you see the sky like this, will you remember our wedding day?” she asked him as they stood together at the edge of the lake, balancing on the dock while they took off their shoes. They sat down, dipping their feet in the cool water which gave way at first then wrapped itself around their ankles, gentle strokes of perfect coolness. They sat there, gazing into the blue, watching the sun set beneath the tops of the trees and taking deep breaths. Drinking everything in. The summer warmth, the nearness of the other, the fact that finally, they were husband and wife. He couldn’t take his eyes off her for very long because she was that radiant.
Caroline & Scott’s wedding day at Whonnock Lake was full of that summer goodness and of joy. It was so beautiful to witness the strength and depth of their love as we photographed them and their day. There was a point at their first look when it seemed like they were ready to rush over the moment, just to suspend the emotion of it all, because it was so overwhelmingly exciting and joyful, but we asked them to share a hug and just let the moment be. Let the tears come and go and find peace in the embrace of your love.
It was a day of tears from sisters and friends, laughter and incessant joking among the guys, a wedding cake crafted by the maid of honour, a ceremony in sun and shade, hidden among the trees, and a dress that Caroline wore, not a dress that wore her. To me, the day felt like the colour blue-not a sad kind of blue that you feel, but a fresh kind of blue that you breathe-that makes you feel alive. The blue of the lake and of the sky. Incredibly vibrant. Deep and peaceful.
That’s the kind of day it was.
